WEBHOST CHANGE

I would normally post this in the site section so it doesn't all show up in the RSS feed, but I figured that the content may contain some relevant information for folks who want to have their own webhost some day.

For the last couple of years, I've had this site hosted by Wiredhub. I connected with them because they also hosted the510realm.com, a Datsun 510 message board. The staff at Wiredhub been nice, and they're quick to respond to trouble... but I think I've had a few too many site and e-mail outages, so it was time to look for a better web host.

One of the forums I frequent is hosted by Dreamhost, and they're constantly running promotions to get more people signed up. The latest promotion: $50 off a 1- or 2-year hosting subscription, and for the cheapest level of service, that brings it down to less than $6/year.

I figured I'd do the numbers and see how the two hosts stacked up against each other. I've just listed the differences here between their two cheapest hosting plans.

WiredHub
Webspace: 6 GB
Bandwidth: 100 GB
Price: $6.95

Dreamhost
Webspace: 200 GB + adtl 1 GB every week
Bandwith: 2 TB + adtl 16 GB every week
Price: $5.40 $5.86

So... there's no comparison. And Dreamhost is hosting one of the largest forums on the planet, housing over 60,000 active users, and as the site is always up, I think the reliability issue isn't a concern.

I made the switch yesterday, and have been moving all of my content over slowly. I made the mistake of switching the DNS entries for my site too early, knocking my site offline for most of the day yesterday. As you can see, it's up and running again, and most of the site is functional. If you bump into any errors, please send me a comment and I'll jump right on it.

Hey I was thinking of making a website for our house in prep for sale. Whadya' think? $6/yr sounds pretty good for hosting! Could you help me set that up? Something simple with pictures, a walkthrough, description, contact info, that sort of thing? I'm also thinking of doing a video and buying a firewire card. Then posting the video???

Probably couldn't pay that much but I'm thinking maybe $20-30 for your time?

Would you want the site *dedicated* to selling your house? What happens once the house sells? Would make more sense to have a site that houses ALL of your content, and then have a *section* for the sale of your house?

I think that would serve your needs better.

Hmmm...Not a bad idea.

I would then have to think of an idea for a name. Newprotest is already taken so...what else is there?

True, true. However, nudeprotest.org is still available, I noticed.

Not sure if you read this post, but towards the bottom, you'll notice that somebody was looking up "lucaso," and probably trying to find you. Maybe you should keep that name in your domain name somewhere.

Where did you see this promotion?

All I see on Dreamhost is a 20% off deal if you pay for 2 years in advance; which brings the effective cost to $7.95 per month, not $6 a year...

I also emailed this to you...
