MAKING STUFF

A while back, I had the clever idea of trying to double a seed amount of $100 every month through 2007, and while I'm currently on target (with over $400), a new baby in the house certainly complicates things a bit. It's working fine for now, while my mother-in-law is in town, but once she flies back down to California, it'll just be me and my wife... and I'm pretty sure I be able to scout around for stuff to buy to turn around and resell. Buying and selling stuff beyond the first $500 mark takes a lot of time, and I just don't have it. That said, I think I'm going to close down my project-double blog.

As long as I plan to stay under the $500 mark, I think I can handle the time commitment. Lately, I've been working on little sewing crafts, making wallets out of Tyvek and Denim... and I have some pleather sitting around to make something else. I probably won't stick to just sewing to make money, as I tend to get bored of my projects pretty quickly. I'll likely rotate the sewing with some welding, and maybe some other crafty things that folks online seem to enjoy and are willing to buy.

At this point, I don't have a monetary goal -- I just want to keep this as a money making hobby, and not as a "job." Once it turns into a job, it becomes work, and I really don't want to hate my hobbies. With the way I'm doing it now, I'm able to make a limited run of the things I'm making, make some money out of it, and then move on to something else and repeat the process. This allows me to get better at everything I'm doing, and fund the very projects I want to do. Seems like a reasonable way to go.

I've decided to start a new category on my blog titled crafts, which will break away from the current DIY section. I figure that DIY is more about tinkering on stuff and making repairs that save me money, whereas crafts are things I make that are... crafty. Stuff like my potting bench and my decorative chicken coop. Those are mighty crafty.

Note: I'll leave my welding category as it is. Yes, welding is crafty, but I've got enough welding posts to warrant a separate category.
