It looks like a new wave of vehicle license plates will be arriving shortly - the ePlate, which includes an RFID chip in it so law enforcement can track where your vehicle is. In theory, this should allow for easy paying of tolls as you cross a bridge, traffic flow monitoring, and of course, helping to fight the war on terrorism.
With a scanner and access to a parking lot, law enforcement can instantly determine who is in the area (provided that there are no stolen cars in the area). And once a grid is established, they'll be able to tell when the vehicle got there, where the vehicle is travelling, etc., etc.
I'm telling you. 1984 is now.
