Genesis 35

Grief and the House of God

173 words · May 1, 2026

The whiplash of emotional and spiritual experience for Jacob between verse 15 and verse 19 of Genesis 35 is breathtaking.

In verses 14 and 15, Jacob has an encounter with God that causes him to name the place "The House of God." God has made promises to him, to bless him and make him a great nation, such that kings would come from his line.

So Jacob set up a memorial stone in the place where He had spoken with him, a memorial of stone, and he poured out a drink offering on it; he also poured oil on it. And Jacob named the place where God had spoken with him, Bethel. Genesis 35:14-15 (NASB)

But shortly after that event, after they departed from the House of God and before they arrive at Ephrath (which means "the place of fruitfulness and abundance"), Jacob's beloved wife Rachel dies in childbirth.

So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). Genesis 35:19 (NASB)

There are lessons here. They are painful.
